The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has brought technological advancements, but it has also introduced risks. One such example is a recent scam involving a deepfake of YouTube megastar Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast.

This fraudulent ad, which circulated on TikTok, used AI-generated imagery to impersonate the influencer and promote a fake iPhone giveaway. The scam misled thousands of viewers into believing they could purchase an iPhone 15 Pro for just $2.

The Scam: A Convincing Deception

The deepfake ad featured a realistic AI-generated version of MrBeast, complete with his logo and a verified checkmark to make it appear legitimate.

In the video, the fake MrBeast claimed he was giving away 10,000 iPhone 15 Pros as part of "the world’s largest iPhone giveaway". Viewers were instructed to click a link to claim their prize, only to be redirected to fraudulent websites designed to steal their money or personal information.

While the deepfake wasn’t perfect—eagle-eyed viewers noted slight inconsistencies in the voice and lip synchronization—it was convincing enough to deceive many people. The scam capitalized on MrBeast’s reputation for extravagant giveaways, making it seem plausible to unsuspecting fans.

MrBeast Responds…

MrBeast quickly took to social media to warn his followers about the scam. On Twitter, he expressed frustration over the growing prevalence of deepfakes and questioned whether social media platforms were prepared to handle this emerging threat.

“Lots of people are getting this deepfake scam ad from me… are social media platforms ready to handle the rise of AI deepfakes? This is a serious problem,” he wrote.

TikTok removed the ad and banned the associated account for violating its policies. However, the damage had already been done, with screenshots of the video still circulating online.

Broader Implications

The MrBeast deepfake scam is not an isolated incident. Other celebrities, including Tom Hanks and Robin Williams’ daughter Zelda Williams, have also spoken out against unauthorized AI-generated content using their likenesses.

These incidents underline a broader issue: as AI technology improves, its misuse is becoming more widespread across industries ranging from entertainment to financial services.

The legal framework surrounding deepfakes remains underdeveloped. While platforms like TikTok have policies against misleading synthetic media, enforcement is inconsistent. Experts warn that without stronger regulations and advanced detection tools, deepfake scams will continue to proliferate.

The MrBeast deepfake scam serves as a reminder of how emerging technologies can be weaponized for malicious purposes. As AI continues to evolve, society must manage its ethical implications and develop safeguards to protect against its misuse.
